When choosing a therapist, you may notice various letters and credentials listed after their names, such as RP, RPQ, LPC, and CCC. These designations indicate specific qualifications and licenses.
RP: Registered Psychotherapist
A Registered Psychotherapist (RP) is a mental health professional licensed to practice psychotherapy. In Ontario, Canada, this designation is regulated by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). RPs are trained to assess and treat cognitive, emotional, or behavioral disturbances by providing a wide range of therapeutic interventions. They work with individuals, couples, families, and groups to address various mental health issues and promote emotional well-being.
RPQ: Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying)
An RPQ, or Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), is a practitioner who has completed their education and training and is in the process of gaining the required clinical experience to become a fully Registered Psychotherapist. This designation indicates that the therapist is working towards meeting all the requirements for full registration.
LPC: Licensed Professional Counselor
A Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) is a mental health professional licensed to provide counseling services in the United States. LPCs hold a master’s degree in counseling or a related field and have completed supervised clinical experience. They are licensed by state counseling boards and can diagnose and treat mental health disorders, provide psychotherapy, and offer guidance and support to clients.
CCC: Canadian Certified Counsellor
A Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) is a designation granted by the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA). CCCs have completed a graduate-level education in counseling or a related field and have met the CCPA’s standards for certification, including supervised clinical experience. They provide counseling and psychotherapy services, helping clients navigate personal and emotional challenges. This certification ensures that the counselor adheres to ethical standards and ongoing professional development.
